- You can create categories and assign individual posts to each category
- These categories can be selected by users to refine news content
- Clicking the Categories link will display the Categories page.
- From here, you can see all your categories on the right, and where to add new ones.
- When adding a new category on this screen, you’ll fill in the following fields:
- Name — The name is how it appears on your site.
- Slug — The “slug” is the URL-friendly version of the name. It is usually all lowercase and contains only letters, numbers, and hyphens.
- Parent — If you like, you can create a sub-category – a category within a category
- Description — The description is not prominent by default; however, some themes may display it.
- ‘Uncategorized’ is an automatically created category, which only appears to the user if you have posts with no assigned categories

- To assign a post to a category, you must create the category first
- Once the desired category has been created, you can assign the post to the category from that post’s page
