David Bebbington's reader-family book answers questions that every practicing Christian and many outside the faith have often asked:  where did they all come from, why do they exist, what do they believe and practice? The sharp focus of the book's historical account of Christian denominations is matched by its perceptive description of the denominations against major cultural trends. An appendix with a representative hymn for each denominational family is unusually illuminating. This fine book serves as an informative introduction, but also with much for those of us who consider ourselves experts.

While Christians today are ostensibly living in a 'post-denominational' age, every congregation has a history, one connected to a denomination or a theological tradition. We do well to remember that history, lest we be ignorant of our churches' roots, struggles, and cultural influences. There is no better guide to the history of churches and culture than David Bebbington, so I heartily recommend this book.
